Caring for your Deck
- Decks are an important part of the Australian lifestyle. Care and maintenance of your deck is essential.
- For ease of maintenance conduct a 12 monthly inspection.
- Decks are an external feature and they are exposed to external weathering elements such as moisture and the sun.
- Regular sweeping and cleaning can be carried out to remove grime, dust or leaves. A soft fibre broom or a blower will remove surface debris.
- A wet rag is required to remove dust. Detergents are not required as they can wear the surface leaving a dull look.
- Regular maintenance will help protect the timber from the damage caused by ultraviolet light and the weather. It will also stop the timber prematurely cracking and aging and keep your deck looking vibrant.
- We recommend a surface recoat every 12 months or earlier if required as the finish begins to show signs of dryness or loss of cover.
Maintenance Tips
- Use floor mats at the entrance of your deck. They are critical to deck maintenance.
- The aim of the matting system must be to remove dirt and grit from the shoes of people about to walk on the deck.
- Use micro-fibre mops made for external cleaning use.
- Remove pools of water as soon as possible after it has rained to avoid water damage.
- When watering pot plants on decks be aware of water leaking on to deck. Excess moisture can leave dark stains in the timber.
- Apply furniture protective pads under furniture items to minimise surface scratching.
